Bike Lanes
Bicycle lanes can
provide a convenient way for citizens to get around, but they aren’t worth the
money that goes into them. The bike
lanes I see in Victoria are usually completely empty, and when they are in use,
its usually not by more than one or two bikers. Millions of dollars are being
sunk into these bike lanes which end up having little pay off in the long run. When
three million dollars is needed just to complete a bike lane that will most
likely not get a lot of use to begin with, it really makes it seem like the
money could be put towards something better and more beneficial to a wider
group of citizens.
This money may
be better put towards finding solutions to the congested areas of traffic throughout
Victoria. Areas such the ‘Colwood crawl’ that often have long waits in traffic
just to move a few miles could particularly benefit from this. I can see where
there are positives towards having these bike lanes, it gives people another
means of transportation that doesn’t harm the environment while also providing
a good source of exercise. However, if you look at the larger picture, it just doesn’t
seem like all this money is worth it.
Perhaps a
solution would be some kind of “user pay” system, where those who really wish
to have these lanes could put money towards implementing them. A toll fee or
license system could help finance the project and keep these lanes available
for those who may need them.
